5 Common Dental Problems Among Kids
Children generally are not as diligent about their dental care as their older counterparts. They may rush through their brushing and flossing routines so that they can watch television or go out and play sooner. If your have a child of your own, it is up to you to teach him or her good oral hygiene habits.
Here are five common dental problems among kids.
Cavities
While anyone can develop cavities, they are much more common among children. Many kids love to eat candy and other sugary treats, which can promote bacterial growth and decay. Children also don't spend enough time brushing their teeth every day.
Try to limit the amount of sugary snacks your child eats, and teach him or her to brush his or her teeth for at least two minutes twice a day.
Thum Sucking
Thumb sucking is a common habit among little children. They may find it comforting and relaxing. However, if your child continues to suck his or her thumb past the age of 4, it could lead to an overbite and other long-term oral health issues. Talk to your child about the negatives and thumb sucking, and help him or her break the habit once and for all.
Sensitive Teeth
Kids tend to have thinner enamel than adults, so many of them deal with sensitive teeth. They may feel pain when they eat or drink something cold or hot. If your child has sensitive teeth, you can have the dentist apply dental sealants to strengthen the teeth.
Gum Disease
Adults are not the only ones who are susceptible to gum disease. Young children can also develop the condition if they do not practice good oral hygiene. Plaque and tartar can build up on the gums, making them red and swollen. If gum disease is not addressed soon enough, it can lead to tooth loss and other problems.
Regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups at a pediatric dental clinic are key to preventing gum disease.
Teeth Grinding
Teeth grinding is a common habit among children and can eventually wear down the enamel of the teeth. If your child can't seem to stop clenching his or her teeth, consider having him or her wear a mouthguard.
If your child has any of these dental issues, it is important to take him or her to the dentist soon. The sooner you address a dental issue, the easier it is to treat.
